I’m Mandy, and a bit of a career changer extraordinaire!
Having started out doing civil engineering, I soon decided that teaching maths to 11 to 18 year olds was more for me. I took a year out to do an MSc nearly 10 years ago and haven’t quite managed to return to the classroom properly yet despite a few adventures supply teaching and tutoring.
I spent a few years doing software development for a company that specialised in interactive television applications, but they restructured and we moved away from the area. I became self-employed at around that time, initially running an internet based retail company. This experience was great. I wanted to know how to do all of the business aspects by myself, to satisfy my curiousity as much as anything! I taught myself as the business developed, gaining bookkeeping qualifications and learning how to develop websites and put together formal business plans along the way. It wasn’t long before I realised that these parts of the business interested me more than the marketing and retail bits, and the company was handed over to someone else so I could focus on what I preferred.
I now teach business start up courses and have a select handful of bookkeeping, web hosting and web development clients. I love the variety of my work, the flexibility I have and even the stresses that come from being my own boss. I’m bemused by how I’ve accidentally fallen into work that suits my background and interests perfectly, and have met some fantastic people on my journey to where I am today.
I hope you enjoy this site!
